Swimming Safety in Marinas

Marinas are an exciting place for water lovers. But marinas are, first and foremost, for boats. While you may have wondered whether swimming is safe in a marine, if you are a marina owner or operator, it is important to understand that it’s not. Swimming can be dangerous and a major liability. Read on to understand why.

Can You Swim in a Marina?

Technically, it is not hard to get into the water at a marina. Especially for kids or young adults, it may seem like taking a dive off the dock will be fun (and possibly safe).

But it’s not. Swimming can be extremely dangerous in marinas, for the following reasons:

  • Injuries from boats — particularly larger ones that cannot see smaller people in the water — are a major risk
  • Electric shock from a boat is another dangerous risk
  • Dirty or polluted water at marinas is unfortunately sometimes a reality, and getting in it should be avoided
  • Drowning is a risk, particularly in murky marina water

If you own or operate a marina, know that you could be held liable for injuries or deaths suffered by swimmers. Be sure to craft a comprehensive insurance policy and stringently enforce a “no swimming” rule.
